Alderwoman Hadden's office has been championing changes to Glenwood Avenue since her first term after her office received numerous contacts for pedestrian & bike-friendly improvements on Glenwood Avenue between W. Devon & W. Pratt Avenues. At the time, neighbors were in favor of the one-way northbound proposal as proposed by CDOT. Glenwood Commuter Safety Meeting Recap &
Survey Open - 10/5/24
Option 1: Glenwood remains a two-way street with traffic calming measures
Option 2: Glenwood converts to a one-way northbound street
October 5th, 2024 — On October 1, Alderwoman Hadden hosted a community meeting regarding a proposed traffic pattern change on Glenwood Avenue between Devon and Pratt Avenues. This community meeting was a follow-up on feedback our office received through our community process regarding plans to modify the traffic pattern on Glenwood Avenue that was initiated by our office previously. You can view all previous materials regarding this matter from our office here.
Representatives from CDOT were on hand to present two options for the traffic pattern on Glenwood - a one-way traffic plan and a two-way traffic plan. Both options contain safety and calming measures for all modes of transport along the street.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Deputy Ward Director, Kyle Ryan, at kyle@49thward.org or call our office at 773-338-5796.

Glenwood Commuter Safety Initiatives History:
2019-2022
A graphic from our first community meeting on Glenwood Commuter Safety, which occurred on July 26th, 2021
Last updated on October 7th, 2024 — Since Alderwoman Hadden first entered office in 2019, residents have consistently reached out with concerns about this particular stretch of Glenwood. The street is nestled in a dense area with many pedestrians. The heavy foot traffic combined with the existing bike lanes and two-way vehicular traffic on a narrow residential street has created unsafe conditions.

In 2021, our office convened a community meeting with neighbors and residents to discuss the issue further. The objective of the meeting was to take a broader look at this stretch of Glenwood and see how we can improve safety for all users (motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians).
After soliciting feedback from area residents, CDOT conducted a traffic study for this stretch of Glenwood. Upon the conclusion of that study, they recommended modifying traffic to flow one-way northbound on Glenwood between Pratt and Devon. The northbound direction was determined by conversations with first responders who indicated that they needed it to remain northbound for their vehicles in the event of an emergency. Additionally, the proposal calls to keep the existing bike lanes, which connect to a greenway both north and south of this stretch. The proposal calls for no elimination of parking.

After our community meeting, we asked commuters of all types to share their feedback and ideas on how to improve commuter safety along this stretch of Glenwood. This survey was open during March of 2022. We received valuable feedback from residents while the survey was open. To access all results, click the button above to go to the archived website.
For the open-ended questions, a plurality (48.9%) of respondents expressed they liked the proposal in its current form and didn't have additional feedback to provide. Of the 331 respondents, only 8% responded that the proposal shouldn't be pursued and that no changes should be made to adjacent streets. 9% of respondents said they had no feedback to offer or didn't respond at all to the open-ended questions.

In 2024, following two years of nonresponse from the CDOT, our office renewed this request referencing the previous traffic study completed in 2022. Our office is currently soliciting a second round of feedback from neighbors. Please take the time to fill out the community survey, linked above!
